Leaft Foods Goes To The Dogs!

Leaft Develops Alfalfa Protein For Dogs Visual Media

Kiwi, Leaft Foods has taken its green-tech know-how beyond the human plate and straight into the pet bowl.

The Rolleston-based startup, best known for pioneering Rubisco extraction for human nutrition, has now applied its leaf-protein technology to create Alfalfa Protein Concentrate (APC), a nutrient-dense ingredient designed specifically for pet food.

APC is extracted from alfalfa leaves using the same plant-based fractionation process that made Leaft a leader in alternative proteins. The result is a meat-compatible, low-carbon ingredient that helps manufacturers maintain a premium, “meat-forward” profile while cutting emissions. Independent data suggests APC generates up to 99% fewer carbon emissions than beef or lamb, reducing a product’s embedded carbon footprint by as much as 20% when used at 5% inclusion.

Leaft’s new partnership with Meateor Pet Food Ingredients New Zealand, part of Scales Corporation’s Global Proteins Division, gives it immediate access to U.S. distribution networks and a clear runway into Europe by 2026. From freeze-dried treats in Japan to new kibble and cat supplements in New Zealand, Leaft’s leaf tech has gone four-legged and it’s already wagging tails across markets.
