UK Great Taste Awards Signal Plant-Based Foods Have Moved Beyond the 'Alternative' Label

One of the world's most respected food judging panels has again recognised a growing number of plant-based products at the 2026 UK Great Taste Awards, reinforcing a trend that is becoming increasingly difficult for the wider food industry to ignore.

Unlike many food competitions, the Great Taste Awards are judged entirely blind by more than 500 chefs, buyers, food writers and retailers. Products are assessed solely on what reaches the palate, not branding, packaging or marketing claims.

This year's winners demonstrate just how diverse the modern plant-based category has become.

Among the standouts were One Planet Pizza, Wild & Furrow's Fresh Oat Drink, Booja-Booja's Fine de Champagne Chocolate Truffles, Califia Farms Extra Creamy Almond Milk, MOMA Foods Pistachio Matcha Oat Drink, Casadei Foods Plant-Based Stracciatella, Squeaky Bean Tuna Style Flakes, THIS™ Isn't Beef Burgers and Mince, Tiba Tempeh, Tofoo & Co, Meatless Farm, Redefine Meat, The Coconut Collab, Beyond Meat, Moving Mountains, Little Moons, Rude Health, and Kinda Co.,

For years, taste has remained the single biggest obstacle preventing mainstream shoppers from switching to plant-based foods. Recognition through one of the world's most respected blind tasting competitions suggests many manufacturers have now crossed that hurdle, producing foods standing on their own culinary merits rather than being judged as "good for a vegan product."

As innovation continues across dairy alternatives, fermented proteins, plant-based meats, desserts and ready meals, the Great Taste Awards are becoming an increasingly important indicator the category is maturing from niche lifestyle choice into genuine mainstream food innovation.
