New Zealand's Food Future Won't Be Decided in the Paddock Alone - RABOBANK

Rabobank's Succession 2050 report signals biotechnology, precision fermentation and value-added nutrition are moving from the fringe to the centre of New Zealand's food future economy.


For decades New Zealand's food story has been built on grass, livestock and commodity exports. But a new white paper from Rabobank argues the country's next generation of prosperity will depend just as much on science, biotechnology and consumer-led innovation as it will on productive farmland.


In its 2026 report Succession 2050 – Gearing up for New Zealand's Food and Agri Future, Rabobank brings together fourteen leading economists, scientists and industry leaders to examine how New Zealand can remain globally competitive through to 2050. The recurring theme is that future value will increasingly come from knowledge, biological innovation and premium nutrition, rather than simply producing larger volumes of traditional commodities.


One of the paper's strongest voices comes from food systems strategist Dr Victoria Hatton, who argues tomorrow's food economy will look fundamentally different from today's. Rather than exporting bulk ingredients alone, she envisages New Zealand transforming biological resources into specialised proteins, functional ingredients and high-value health products. As she notes:

"Asking farmers to imagine that leg of lamb becoming a red meat protein powder, shipped offshore and earning six times the return, is not a simple commercial calculation." 

Her point is not that traditional farming disappears, but that future value increasingly resides in the molecular composition of food rather than its physical form.


The report also highlights precision fermentation, synthetic biology, advanced plant breeding, microbiome science and functional nutrition as emerging sectors capable of sitting alongside conventional farming. In one illustration, future farms may combine livestock and orchards with stainless-steel bioreactors, producing premium food ingredients from microbial fermentation while continuing traditional agricultural production.


RaboBank Chief Economist, Brad Olsen believes New Zealand's competitive advantage will increasingly depend on understanding the customer before deciding what to grow.

"We'll still be a small nation at the bottom of the South Pacific, but we can also punch above our weight with food and fibre on the world stage." 

Rather than competing on scale, Olsen argues New Zealand must compete through relevance, innovation and premium positioning.


The Rabobank report stops short of predicting a wholesale replacement of dairy and meat. Instead, it suggests next-generation proteins and biotechnology are more likely to complement existing agriculture, while capturing selected high-value ingredient markets. Nevertheless, the paper acknowledges that food systems are becoming increasingly shaped by consumer demand for health outcomes, transparency, provenance and environmental performance.


For consumers, the changes may be subtle rather than dramatic. Over the next twenty-five years supermarket shelves are expected to feature foods delivering targeted nutrition for healthy ageing, gut health, muscle maintenance and metabolic wellbeing, while hybrid products blending conventional ingredients with plant proteins and fermentation-derived components become increasingly common. At the premium end of the market, authentic regional and artisanal foods are also expected to gain value as provenance becomes an increasingly important purchasing decision.
