The Arepa Neuroberry Breakthrough

The AREPA Neuroberry Breakthrough

Arepa New Zealand has taken a world-first step from blackcurrant to brain performance. In partnership with Plant & Food Research and Callaghan Innovation, (now under the BioEconomy Science Institute umbrella), scientists have identified sarmentosin, a naturally occurring MAO-B inhibitor found in New Zealand blackcurrants. The compound helps protect dopamine, the neurotransmitter linked to mood, motivation, and mental clarity, marking a scientific and commercial breakthrough for natural cognitive nutrition.

The finding, published in The Journal of Agricultural Chemistry, confirms that consuming blackcurrant powder or juice rich in sarmentosin can reduce mental fatigue and support mood balance. Ārepa has patented the molecule and already formulated its Neuroberry™ extract into a “Smart Nougat” concept and limited-edition Chocolate Brains, developed with the MISTA innovation network.

For a brand built on the mission to “make brains work better,” this discovery doesn’t just reinforce Ārepa’s reputation, it positions New Zealand as a credible source of naturally bioactive brain-boosting compounds at a time when the world is craving clean mental-performance solutions.
