Leaft Foods is barking up a brand-new tree. The Christchurch-based leaf-protein pioneer has launched its Alfalfa Protein Concentrate (APC), a meat-compatible protein derived from green leaves, for the global pet nutrition market. Partnering with Meateor Pet Food Ingredients New Zealand, part of Scales Corporation’s Global Proteins Division, Leaft will distribute APC in the U.S. before rolling into Europe in 2026.

APC is extracted from alfalfa’s rubisco protein, the same compound Leaft first developed for human nutrition. In its pet-food form, it’s designed to fit neatly into existing “meat-forward” recipes while shrinking the environmental footprint. Independent assessments show a 99% lower carbon output than beef or lamb, and at just 5% inclusion can cut a beef recipe’s carbon by 20%.

Already, Japanese brand Hitowan is selling freeze-dried APC-enhanced dog treats, while Kiwi firms GoodNoze and Fourflax prep their own kibble and cat supplements for early 2026. Rich in omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin K, APC makes a strong case for the planet-friendly pooch. The era of the leafy carnivore may have just begun.
