Mother's Day - $200 Million in Flowers, One Stroganoff to Rule Them All

Forget burnt toast and a wilted rose from the servo. This Mother's Day, Australians are going big- $200 million big- on flowers alone. That’s right. Even with grocery bills climbing and rents going OT, they're still lining up for chrysanthemums, tulips, rose, lilies, and anything with a petal to say - Thanks Mum, here’s something that doesn’t require you to do the dishes.

According to the Sydney Flower Markets, the nation’s biggest flower hub, Mother’s Day isn’t just blooming, it’s booming. Growers are flat out, florists are knackered, and the average Aussie is dropping just over $100 to get their floral feelings across.

“Mother’s Day is the pinnacle of the year for us,” says Michael Bagala of Bagala Brothers in Horsley Park. “The workload is massive, but so are the sales.” And Vicki Dominello of Flora Wholesale Direct? She reckons it leaves Valentine’s Day for dead: “Everyone either has a mother, mother-in-law or mother-to-be... so it’s much busier.”

Top picks?

  1. Chrysanthemums (obviously)

  2. Tulips

  3. Lilies

  4. Gerberas

  5. Natives (for the earthy mums)

But the interesting thing is flowers are just the start. If you really want to impress Mum this Sunday, don’t let her near the stove.

Instead of defaulting to overpriced roses and another brunch booking where the hash browns are never crispy, why not actually cook something? And no, we don’t mean just microwaving last night’s curry.

How about a mushroom ball stroganoff so rich it practically does the dishes for you? Creamy tagliatelle, smoky paprika, a touch of Dijon, it’s the kind of plant-based comfort food which makes Mum quietly update her will in your favour. Even better, you can download all 31 recipes from FROOM™’s Meatfree May cookbook and sort dinners for the whole month. One less thing for her to worry about.

New Zealanders spend about $50–60 million on flowers for Mother’s Day - not quite Australia’s $200 million floral blowout, but maybe that’s because the Kiwis are better at picking the right wine and actually calling mum, per se?

So here’s your plan - Buy beautiful flowers. Open some red. Cook the stroganoff. Clean the kitchen. Tell her she's the best.
