Breeding Sows Trapped in Iron – NZ’s Dirty Secret Behind ‘Clean and Green’ Pork

Breeding sows trapped in farrowing cages visual media

Did you know New Zealand still cages its breeding sows - mother pigs, literally. Behind the “clean green kind” image sit iron bars where breeding sows cannot even turn around.

Now the SPCA and Vegan Society NZ are calling for public submissions to end farrowing crates once and for all before the 23 October deadline. It’s the most barbaric hold-over of industrial farming, one that the 2020 High Court already ruled unlawful under the Animal Welfare Act.

A new Bill from the NZ Government would kick the crate can down the road another 10 years— and then allow “temporary” cages indefinitely. That’s not transition; that’s entrenchment. Other nations including Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, have banned them entirely. Why not us? The question now isn’t just about cruelty, it’s about conscience.

And here’s the twist - while Wellington dithers over cages, the world is moving toward cultivated pork. If we can grow meat without pain, why are we still trapping sentient mothers in steel? The submission window is more than a protest — it’s a critical point to decide what kind of food nation New Zealand wants to be - KIND or CRUEL ??
