SunRice Put Collagen Into Rice. Where This Goes Next Is More Interesting

US rice giant SunRice has quietly turned one of the world's most familiar staples into a protein delivery system and the implications could extend well beyond its new product.


Launched recently, SunRice Protein+ is ready-to-heat jasmine rice infused with animal-derived collagen, lifting protein content to at least 10g per serving. SunRice research among 2,000 US adults found 78% regularly question whether they're getting enough protein, while 65% are attracted to protein-enhanced staples if taste and texture remain intact.


For plant-based consumers there's an obvious problem: the collagen is animal-derived. But the more important innovation may be the delivery mechanism. SunRice has taken an inexpensive, globally familiar staple and added functional protein without requiring consumers to adopt another food category.


That's where biotechnology makes the story interesting. Recombinant collagen can increasingly be produced using engineered biological systems rather than conventional animal extraction. In New Zealand, Auckland-based Opo Bio is developing Opo-Collagen through synthetic biology and biomanufacturing. Its current applications are cosmetic and medical rather than food, but the technology points towards a future where collagen production may no longer necessarily require livestock.


The bigger question therefore isn't whether SunRice replaces bovine collagen tomorrow. It's whether rice has demonstrated something far larger: could everyday staples become delivery vehicles for the next generation of proteins?
