If you’re on the fence about going plant-based, here’s a sizzling reason to give it a shot: a new study has found replacing animal products with plant-based foods can cut hot flushes by an astounding 92%. That’s a game-changer for menopausal women seeking relief without hormone treatments or medication.
The study, led by researchers from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, focused on dietary shifts as a natural remedy for hot flashes, a common symptom of menopause. Participants who swapped out meat and dairy for whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and soy-based foods reported a dramatic drop in the frequency and intensity of their hot flashes.

For women who identify as flexitarians or are curious about reducing their meat and dairy intake, the findings couldn’t be more encouraging. "The results suggest that even small changes can have a big impact on menopause symptoms," says Dr Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee.
But what’s the science behind this? Animal products, particularly dairy, can contain hormones that may interfere with the body's natural balance, potentially worsening hot flashes. In contrast, plant-based foods like soy contain isoflavones, compounds that mimic oestrogen and may help regulate hormone fluctuations.
For those hesitant to go fully vegan, experts recommend starting small. "You don’t have to overhaul your diet overnight," says dietitian Susan Levin. "Try meatless Mondays or swap your morning dairy yoghurt for a plant-based alternative."

The bonus? Alongside tackling hot flashes, plant-based diets can lower cholesterol, improve heart health, and even help maintain a healthy weight. If you’re wavering on the edge of a plant-based lifestyle, this might be the nudge you need to take the plunge and stay cool in the process.
