Vietnamese Cities Blend Organic Agriculture with Vertical Farming

Vietnam’s busy cities are confronting rapid urbanisation and shrinking farmland by augmenting traditional organically grown vegetables with cutting-edge urban vertical farming models. In Ho Chi Minh City, cooperatives like Tuan Ngoc Hydroponic Vegetable Cooperative are expanding hydroponic and IoT-controlled production, scaling from 1,000 m² of leafy greens in 2019 to over 10,000 m² today and boosting output from 3 t to ~30 t monthly while maintaining premium quality and traceability.

City authorities are integrating these vertical and clean urban farming methods into broader agricultural strategy, supporting hundreds of cooperatives and linking peri-urban producers with city markets through mobile stalls and “clean produce” programmes. This push strengthens food safety, diversifies supply sources, and drives income gains for farmers while aligning with green growth targets.

Beyond Ho Chi Minh City, discussions in workshops and development plans in cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, and Can Tho show growing interest in rooftop farms, community gardens, and vertical systems as solutions for green space deficits, climate resilience, and sustainable urban food systems. Urban agriculture, from hydroponics to stacked vertical farms, is increasingly seen as essential to future food security across Vietnam’s major urban centres.
