What began in 1975 with nervous tenants staring at empty stalls has become a 2.5 million-tonne food distribution powerhouse servicing millions across metropolitan Australia.


The “Class of ’75”, 39 traders still at their stands today, clearly show fresh produce markets aren’t just relics, they’re living eco-systems linking growers, wholesalers, and consumers in one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest food hubs.


As supermarket chains tighten their grip, Sydney Markets’ endurance is a reminder big cities still need centralised fresh markets, not only for scale and efficiency but for community, continuity, and resilience in the food supply chain.
