As the awareness of environmental impacts from traditional food sources increases, both companies have ventured into cultivated proteins to minimise reliance on over-exploited fish resources and reduce the ecological footprint of pet foods. Using UMAMI Bioworks' technology, integrating advanced stem cell biology with machine learning and automation, the partnership has produced a new line of cat treats not only nutritious and affordable but also 'Earth Friendly'.

"Our work with Friends & Family Pet Food is a testament to the commercial viability of cultivated seafood in transforming pet and human food systems alike," says Mihir Pershad, CEO of UMAMI Bioworks. "This initiative reflects a shared commitment to high-quality, sustainable protein sources relieving pressure on our oceans".

The treats, part of Friends & Family High Tide Cat Food line, are designed to support a 'Longevity Diet' for pets, featuring a blend of high-quality cultured fish proteins and essential nutrients tailored for optimal feline health. They boast high levels of protein and fibre, enhancing immune and digestive health, and overall well-being.

Set to debut in Singapore and San Francisco in early 2025, these cultivated fish treats are a significant step forward in sustainable pet nutrition. According to Friends & Family and UMAMI Bioworks, the production of cultivated fish is vastly more resource-efficient than conventional aquaculture, utilising fewer natural resources such as land, water, and feed.

Joshua Errett, CEO of Friends and Family, says transformative potential of this project is exciting. "This product is a perfect example of leveraging science and technology to foster significant positive change within the pet food industry."

In another development, Cult Food Science subsidiary, Further Foods will submit a protocol for using lab-grown chicken in its Noochie dog treats and start feeding tests, to the FDA this month, a further move towards more sustainable and ethical pet nutrition practices.
