Jackfruit in Disguise as McDonald’s Brings Back the Meatless McKroket in the Netherlands

It’s the kind of news that makes you look twice at a McMenu. McDonald’s Netherlands has quietly slipped something rather unexpected back into its stores in the form of a meatless version of the iconic Dutch McKroket, and this time, it’s loaded with jackfruit.

Yes, jackfruit. That tropical, fibrous oddball vegans swear by. And now, thanks to a three-way collab with Van Geloven and FiberFoods Group, it’s the star of the re-released Meatless McKroket, available again across the country. The patty’s powered by PrimeJack, a processed jackfruit blend walking and talking like beef, but without the moo or methane.

What’s cheeky here is how unassuming the launch has been. No global fanfare. No sustainability sermon. Just a good ol’ Dutch snack with a fruit-forward twist, right back on the menu. Why ? Because customers asked for it. McDonald’s says it retooled its systems to run both meat and meatless McKrokets side by side, offering Dutch diners the holy grail, a real choice.

This isn’t some niche veggie burger floating around the fringes of the menu either. The McKroket is world famous in the Netherlands, the kind of beloved deep-fried sandwich locals defend with their lives. Swapping in a meatless version is no small shift. It’s McDonald’s, maybe unwittingly, maybe strategically, trialling a new truth and jackfruit might just be beef’s quiet understudy.

And guess what? It works. The texture, the mouthfeel, the savoury pull of it, jackfruit does the job. No animal was hurt in the writing of this article.
