BP International Achieves 32% Food Service Beef Reduction with Plant-Based Innovations

Chef Leo Rodley

It's inspiring to see large multinationals are increasingly stepping up to make a positive impact on the planet, and BP International is leading by example. Under the guidance of Leo Rodley, Group Executive Chef and Culinary Development Specialist, BP in concert with Aramark UK has launched a successful initiative to significantly reduce beef consumption across their staff restaurants and hospitality offerings.

Earlier this year, Leo Rodley and his senior team committed to cutting beef consumption by 30% in 2024. By the end of Q2, they had already surpassed their goal, achieving a 32% reduction compared to 2023. This equates to a remarkable reduction of 5,500 lbs of beef, resulting in substantial CO2 and water savings.

This achievement is a testament to the power of menu engineering and exploring alternative menu options. Leo Rodley credits the success to his incredible team and the collaboration with innovative supply partners like Pulse Kitchen, Eat Curious, and Redefine Meat UK.These partners have introduced plant-based pop-ups with a variety of taster options that have been well-received by colleagues eager to explore and try new sustainable dishes.

Leo Rodley’s project highlights how large corporations can make significant strides in sustainability by setting clear goals, leveraging creative solutions, and fostering partnerships with forward-thinking suppliers. The initiative not only reduces environmental impact but also encourages a culture of sustainability within the organisation.

As BP International and partners continue to look at more areas of their menus where they can make an even bigger impact on their sustainability goals, other multinationals can take inspiration from their approach. By committing to reducing meat consumption, embracing plant-based alternatives, and engaging with innovative suppliers, companies can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Together, these efforts pave the way for a positive impact on the planet, demonstrating that large multinationals can indeed do their bit for the environment.
